The Last Supper

And The Death Of Jesus

Passover is a holy day for the Jewish people. One year, when Passover came around, Jesus’ students asked him where he would like to eat the Passover meal.

Jesus answered him in a strange way. He said, “Go to the city. There is a man there. You will see him carrying a jug of water. Tell him that the time is at hand. Tell him I want to have the meal at his house.”

What did Jesus mean by this? The student wondered this as he went into the city to find the man. When they saw a man carrying a jug of water, they went up to him. They spoke to this man, and he took them to his house. This was where Jesus wanted to have the Passover dinner.

Jesus and all his students gathered at the man’s house and began to eat. Jesus broke the bread and said, “Eat this, this is my body.” Then, he took a glass of wine and said, “Drink this, this is my blood.”

He was saying and doing strange things! Then, he told them all, “This is my last meal. I must leave you. I have to go back and live with my Father. I will come back when the time is right. Until then, I will send the Holy Spirit to live with you.”

“But, what is going to happen, Jesus?” asked one of his students. “Do you mean that you will die? If so, we will protect you!”

“No,” Jesus said. “It is impossible. I must die. One of you will betray me!”

They grew excited when they heard this. They all talked among themselves. Each student told Jesus, “I will not betray you!” But, Jesus knew that it would happen.

After the meal, Jesus gave a long sermon. This was his farewell sermon. His students were very sad.

That night, while they were sleeping, Roman soldiers came to take Jesus. It was his student, Judas, who betrayed him. Like the others, Judas said at dinner, “No, I will not betray you.” But he did.

When the soldiers began to take Jesus, some of the students wanted to fight. Jesus told them they must not. This was all part of his Father’s plan.

They took Jesus before the Roman court, and they found him guilty of claiming to be God’s son. For this, he would be put to death.

The Roman soldiers put Jesus on the cross. They made fun of him for saying that he was God’s son. They did not know that he spoke the truth.

But Jesus forgave them. He said, “Forgive them, Father. They do not know what they are doing.”

Many people came to see Jesus and say goodbye. All were very sad, but Jesus knew that it must happen.

Jesus spoke for his Father, God. Only through Jesus could a person be saved. When Jesus died, he gave everyone the power to go to God without him. Now, Jesus lives forever in all of our hearts.
