Israelites vs Amalekites

God asked Moses to lead the Israelite army. God gave Moses special powers to help them. If Moses held up his hand during the battle, the Israelites would win. If he lowered his hand, they would lose. Whenever the Israelite army fought, Moses would stand on the nearest hilltop or mountain, and raise his hand high into the air. They always had victory!

The Amalekites were a fierce tribe who often fought against the Israelites. The would pop out of the desert and surprise them, and no matter how the Israelites fought, there always seemed to be more Amalekites coming.

One day, the generals of the Israelite army got together for a meeting. “We must destroy all of the Amalekites so they will trouble us no more,” said one of the generals. They all agreed, and the next day, they marched into Amalekite territory ready for battle.

As the Amalekites began to come, Moses raised his hand high in the air. The battle began, and the Israelites gained the upper hand. As they fought, the Amalekites kept coming and coming, and the battle raged on all day long.

In the evening, the battle was going well for Israel, when suddenly the Amalekites began to charge forward. They were beginning to win the battle!

The Israelite general looked to the hilltop where Moses was standing, and he saw that Moses was shaking. “It’s been a long battle,” he said, “Moses is tired!”

He sent one of his men to Moses. “Moses,” said the man, “are you alright?”

“Yes,” said Moses in a shaky voice. “Perfectly fine. Just a little tired, that’s all.” Moses tried to smile, but he was in so much pain that he couldn’t. His hand was starting to get lower and lower.

The general’s man looked around. He saw a tree nearby. He went to the tree and snapped off a big branch. He put this branch next to Moses and used it to brace his arm. This way, his arm would stay in the air!

“That’ll do,” said Moses. “Thank you!” Now, his hand was high in the air again.

The battle raged on, well into the night. All the while the Israelites were winning, but more and more Amalekites kept coming. Late into the night, the Israelites began to fall. The Amalekites were gaining the upper hand!

The same general looked at Moses and said, “Oh no! He is not well!” Moses was leaning against the branch, his legs wobbly and his arm shaking has he held it up with all his might. “Somebody help him!”

Aaron and some of the other Israelites ran to the top of the hill. They held Moses up and two men raised his arm high into the air. They held it there for the rest of the battle, and the Israelites won! Finally, all of the Amalekites were dead.

That night, God asked Moses to write down the story of the battle. He said, “The Amalekites are gone from the earth forever. There is no trace of them left. That is why I want you to write about them, so that nobody forgets this chapter in history!”
